New Nutri-Score calculation

Authors

Beginning January 1, 2024, the landscape of food and beverage nutritional evaluation witnessed a transformation with the launch of an enhanced version of the Nutri-Score. This initiative, which has seamlessly integrated into our daily routine since its debut towards the end of 2017, has been refined to more closely align with the latest dietary guidelines, with the aim of nudging consumers towards making healthier dietary decisions.

Nutri-Score

This updated iteration conducts a more thorough meticulous examination of products, with a special emphasis on their fat, sugar, salt, and sweetener content. The assessment scale, which spans from A (indicating the healthiest choices) to E (indicating the least healthy choices), now sets higher standards. As a result, a range of products, including chocolate spreads, traditional sodas, and cookies, may experience a notable decline in their ratings, more accurately mirroring their nutritional merit.

Moreover, certain food categories such as oils, fish, grains, and processed items will undergo substantial adjustments in their ratings. The reform places an increased focus on saturated fat, sugar, and salt content. Conversely, items like specific oils with lower saturated fat content, omega-3-rich fish, and whole grains stand to gain from the revised criteria.

In response to these stricter guidelines, some brands may decide against featuring the Nutri-Score on their products' packaging. While the Nutri-Score provides valuable guidance for consumers, its display remains a voluntary choice for producers, who cannot be compelled to participate. This decision by numerous food brands highlights the critical role of this evaluative system in shaping consumer preferences.

The Nutri-Score, which has been embraced by various European nations, serves as an essential indicator for gauging the nutritional quality of food products. This significant update signifies a crucial advancement in the pursuit of healthier eating habits, prompting producers to reevaluate their products' formulations. Although the system has its limitations, such as not considering the presence of additives like preservatives or dyes, these enhancements are a meaningful step towards offering consumers clearer and more beneficial nutritional information.

The recent modifications to the Nutri-Score herald positive news for individuals aiming for a more balanced nutritional intake. Stay informed by monitoring the labels on your preferred products and accessing the wealth of resources available to assist you in making informed dietary choices, contributing to a healthier and more mindful eating lifestyle.

We were inspired by the Nutri-Score to create a new indicator called Promoscore®. Similar to how the Nutri-Score rates the quality of food, Promoscore® rates the quality of prices.
